Homecoming at the Â鶹Çø took on an especially festive—and frightfully fun—twist this year as Halloween spirit swept across campus. From the starting line of the Crimson Classic 5K to the packed stands of Magness Arena and the glowing lights of the Hunter’s Moon Apartment Festival, students, alumni, and community members showed their DU pride in costume and in style.Ìý

With additional events including volleyball and soccer matches, a faculty-led arboretum tour, and a pregame tailgate, the weekend offered something for everyone, showcasing the connection and community that define the DU experience.

Here are a few of the moments—and costumes—that captured the fun and spirit of a very Haunted Homecoming.

Costumes on the run

Runners, walkers, and a few costumed creatures got into the Halloween spirit at this year’s Crimson Classic. Held Oct. 22, which turned out to be a crisp, bluebird Colorado fall day, the 13th annual 5K run and 1.5-mile walk brought out more than 1,000 community members—including a dinosaur, a unicorn, and a baby chick, among others.

Moonlight and mischief

Under the night sky and in the glow of string lights and candles, students gathered on Oct. 30 at the York Street Apartments District for the Hunter’s Moon Apartment Festival. A celebration of culture, science, and the spirit of autumn, activities included a baby goat petting zoo, pumpkin painting station, solar system telescope viewing, tarot card readers, Día de los Muertos celebrations, and more.

Tricks, treats, and goals

Fresh from the DU homecoming tailgate, thousands of fans—many in costume—packed Magness Arena on Halloween night to cheer on DU Men’s Hockey against Alaska Anchorage. A thrilling Pioneer goal with just 80 seconds left sent the game into overtime, though DU ultimately fell by a score of 4-3. The Halloween spirit, however, wasn’t dampened: The next night, the Pioneers came back strong, shutting out Alaska Anchorage 6-0. And somewhere in the crowd, a mysterious ghost made sure not to miss a moment of the action—a fitting spectator for a spirited Halloween weekend.
