This is an overview of American Sign Language (ASL) for students with no previous study or background in ASL. The focus is on basic vocabulary, structure, syntax, and grammar. Learners will work on mastering the basics of fingerspelling, numbers, colors, facial grammar, and sentence structure; students learn about conversational/cultural behaviors necessary to hold a beginning-level conversation in ASL with deaf/hard-of-hearing native users of the language. Introductory information about deaf culture is presented, along with deaf humor, to provide students with a broad picture of ASL language and culture. Learners can earn 1 continuing education unit (CEU) for this course.
